Joe joined Reflections from the conception of the band in August 2001. He was born in Barcelona Spain in 1956 and came to Canada in 1961 at the age of 4. He started learning music in Jr. High School when he was 13. Although the music teacher didn't seem to like him, he agreed to accept Joe as a student and member of the school band providing Joe; teach himself to read music. Within 6 months, the first instrument that became available was the alto saxophone. Joe was given a sax and a music book. Within 3 months he was fully integrated into the class and despite the teacher's best efforts to discourage him, Joe could keep up with the others. Joe started listening to many other saxophone players of the time but found himself gravitating towards the older more stylish players of the past. His all time favorite was a sax legend named Sonny Stit. His style was simple and easy to listen to. Joe wanted to emulate Sonny's style while paying tribute to a music great.
Joe had a unique way of approaching music, his gift was in hearing harmonies and background music that is not always noticeable to the average untrained ear. Joe laments, "My first exposure outside of school to music came when a friend of mine asked me to sit and listen to a practice with the band he was currently playing in. I was introduced to Anthony at the age of 16 and I sat through their practice with my tape recorder in hand. That week I practiced with the tape and by the following weekend was able to play most of their songs. That was the beginning of many enjoyable years of playing with some very talented musicians."
Today, Joe enjoys all styles of music. He enjoys listening to others and also enjoys playing for others. "I hope that my love of music will be felt in my style and in my performance as I enjoy giving the gift of music to others."
Joe and his wife Nina currently live in Brampton, Ontario.
